Male factor infertility contributes to around 40–50% of all fertility problems in couples — yet it receives a fraction of the clinical attention directed at female fertility. TCM offers one of the most effective natural approaches to improving sperm quality available.

Male infertility and sperm health

Semen analysis measures four key parameters: count (total number of sperm), motility (percentage moving progressively), morphology (percentage with normal shape) and volume. Suboptimal results in any of these areas — or a combination — can significantly reduce the chances of natural conception and affect IVF/ICSI outcomes. High sperm DNA fragmentation, which is not included in standard semen analysis, is an additional factor increasingly associated with recurrent miscarriage and failed IVF cycles.

Dr D'Alberto has extensive experience treating male infertility using TCM acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, often treating both partners simultaneously to maximise the chances of conception.

How acupuncture improves sperm quality

Clinical research supports the use of acupuncture for multiple sperm parameters:

Chinese herbal medicine for male fertility

Herbal medicine is often the most powerful component of male fertility treatment in TCM. Formulas are prescribed based on the individual TCM diagnosis — typically addressing patterns of Kidney Yang or Yin deficiency, Damp-Heat in the lower Jiao or Qi and Blood deficiency — and provide continuous systemic support between acupuncture sessions.

Lifestyle and dietary guidance

Dr D'Alberto provides detailed lifestyle and dietary guidance as part of every male fertility treatment plan, covering diet, key supplements (antioxidants, zinc, CoQ10, vitamin D), heat avoidance, exercise, alcohol and the impact of stress on sperm production. These factors can have a meaningful effect on semen analysis results within the 90-day sperm maturation cycle.

The 90-day cycle

Sperm takes approximately 72–90 days to develop from spermatogonium to mature spermatozoon. This means that meaningful improvements in semen analysis results become measurable approximately three months after beginning treatment. A repeat semen analysis at this point provides a clear picture of treatment progress. Dr D'Alberto recommends a minimum of three months of treatment before reassessment.

Treating couples together

Fertility is a shared journey, and the most effective approach treats both partners. Dr D'Alberto regularly sees couples where both partners have contributing factors — female hormonal or structural issues alongside male sperm parameter problems. Treating both simultaneously gives the best possible chance of a successful outcome. See our fertility acupuncture page for female fertility treatment.
